Words from Tale2Tell's Founder

Hello folks,

The idea of Tale2Tell was inspired by my late paternal grandmother. She was an amazing woman who took her 4th-grade education from a third world country and led an extraordinary life. She survived the horrors of World War II, lived her own Shakespearean tragedy (reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet) and raised a family who all went on to lead successful lives. She was loving, caring and soft. She passed away before anyone could immortalise her struggles, accomplishments and joys while she walked the earth. I was left with the evanescent memories of bygone conversations between her and I when she generously opened a window to her soul and let me look in. I don't want another person to have to settle for that.

Tale2Tell was launched on 4 May 2019 in honour of Mary Elaine Manlangit, a close family friend. She joined the celestial poets on this day in 1991 at the age of 19. She was kind, intelligent, beautiful and hilarious. She taught me how to play the piano, loved to sing Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" in the bathroom, and had an infectious laugh reminiscent of Looney Tunes cartoons. She also visited me in my dreams for the next seven nights after she passed, replaying memories of moments shared over the years and helping me confront my fractured belief in the fairness of Life. Hers was also the first life story I ever read when her parents kindly invited me to read her last diary. She was always a gentle soul, but I had no idea of the true depth of her compassion, empathy and spirituality until I read her words. Her words continue to make me want to do better, be better.

I think that's what life stories can't help but do - inspire. Another lesson Elaine taught me was that the true measure of a life is not by the number of dawns and sunsets lived through but by the number of lives enriched by your hand and how many mourn your passing (and mourn still).

Yours Sincerely,

Clare Fernando
